About Me

Hi, I’m Alison, a neurodivergent pediatric occupational therapist based in Champaign-Urbana and surrounding areas. I created CU in OT as a resource for families, caregivers, and professionals looking to better understand pediatric occupational therapy and access support in our community.

Welcome to CU in OT!

Why CU in OT?

When I had my daughter, I suddenly found myself on the other side of the therapy process—not just as an OT, but as a parent. I quickly realized how frustrating it can be to wait for evaluations, referrals, and services, all while wanting to help my child right away. I wished there had been a place to find clear, practical information I could implement immediately—something beyond waiting lists and paperwork.

That’s why I created CU in OT. My goal is to make pediatric OT information accessible, easy to understand, and actionable for families in Champaign-Urbana and beyond. Whether you’re looking for sensory strategies, fine motor activities, or simply a better understanding of your child’s development, I hope this site provides the knowledge and support you need while you wait for formal services.

If this helps even one family feel more confident and empowered, then it’s worth it. 💙

Thank you for being here—I’m so glad you found CU in OT!

How I Found My Passion for OT

My journey into occupational therapy started in high school when I began volunteering in a special education classroom. I spent my open period there every day for four years, helping students and learning alongside their teachers and therapists. One day a week, the OT’s schedule lined up with mine, and that’s when I saw firsthand the impact OT can have on kids with disabilities. From adaptive equipment to sensory strategies and fine motor skill-building, I was fascinated by how OT helped children participate more fully in their world. I knew then that this was the career for me.

I earned my degree in occupational therapy from Saint Louis University, where I gained a strong foundation in pediatric development and rehabilitation. One of my most transformative experiences was my clinical rotation in the NICU at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, where I worked extensively with medically fragile and preterm infants. This deepened my passion for early intervention and supporting children from the very start of their lives.

After graduating, I began my career in adult acute care, working in hospitals during the height of COVID-19. While this experience strengthened my skills in critical care and rehabilitation, my heart was always in pediatrics. I eventually transitioned into working with children full-time and haven’t looked back since.

Currently, I work as a contracted pediatric occupational therapist for Learn Play Live and as a full-time early intervention therapist with DSC (Developmental Services Center). In these roles, I support children and families by helping them build the foundational skills they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
